GRAは“支援”の塊です（2） / GRA is a Mass of "Support"（2）

『 参加者全員 / All Participants 』

GRAを発足させた時の決意「 楽しみたいのなら、ライダー自身の手でイベントを作っていく必要がある 」を基に、1991年、イベント開催を始めた初年度から、イベントへの参加者全員でイベントの運営に必要なスタッフ職を分担するシステム【 全員スタッフ全員参加制 】を導入しました。

GRA was founded with the determination that "If we want to have fun, we need to create the event with our own hands." Based on this, from the first year of the event in 1991, we introduced a system in which all participants in the event share the staff positions necessary for the event's operation [All staff, all participants participate].

つまり、受付けなど本部席の設置に始まり、会場内の片付けに至るまで、イベント運営の全てを参加者全員で分担し合い、且つ、全員がレッスンやタイムトライアルなどに参加するシステムで、一般的なイベントでは常識的な、運営だけの専従スタッフは一人も置かないのが大きな特徴です。

In other words, all participants share the entire event operation, from setting up the reception desk to cleaning up the venue, and everyone also participates in lessons and time trials. A major feature of this system is that there are no full-time staff members who are solely responsible for operation, as is the case in other events.

そのため、受付や会計などのスタッフ職を希望または任された参加者は、イベント会場に入った直後から、受付関連の業務を行なってくれて、それ以外の参加者は 本部席の設置からコースの作成を行なってくれました。

Therefore, participants who requested or were entrusted with staff positions such as reception and accounting performed reception-related tasks immediately after entering the event venue, while other participants set up the headquarters seat and created the course.

当然ですが、初めて参加する人もいますし、担当するスタッフ職が初めての人もいます。その上、スタッフ職は固定制ではなく、開催日前の打合せは行なわないので、すべてが当日の “ぶっつけ本番” でした。しかし、経験した事のある人が初めての人に説明をして、初めての人は一生懸命にこなしてくれたのです。特に、タイム計測用の機器、通称、光電管セットの設置と使い方は殆どの人が知らないのですが、積極的にやってくれました。お蔭で、GRAのイベントに数回の参加経験のある人の多くは光電管セットを扱えるようになってくれました。

Naturally, there were some people who were participating for the first time, and some who were new to the staff positions they were in charge of. Furthermore, the staff positions were not fixed, and there were no meetings before the event, so everything was "Off the CUt" on the day of the event. However, everyone shared what they knew and did their best to get the job done. In particular, at first no one knew how to set up and use the time measurement equipment, but everyone was proactive in helping out, and many of those who had participated in several events were able to use it.

そんな風に、積極的にスタッフ職をこなし、初めて会う人にも話しかけ、一緒にイベントを作り上げようという気持ちに溢れる人たちのお蔭で、大きな事故も無く、すべてのイベントは無事に開催できました。その上、スタッフ職さえも一緒に楽しもうとしてくれた人たちが多かった事に感謝しています。それは、GRA発足時の期待以上の成果です。

Thanks to the people who were so proactive in their staff roles, talking to people they met for the first time, and full of enthusiasm to create the event together, all the events were held without any major accidents. I am also grateful that even the staff were willing to join in and have fun. This is an outcome that exceeded our expectations when GRA was launched.

そのため、タイムトライアル時の 計測本部テントの中はいつも笑顔で溢れていました。特に、実況解説を担当する解説MC係を受け持ってくれた人々の笑顔と叫び声は会場中に響き渡っていました。

Because of this, the time trial tent was always full of smiles. In particular, the smiles and shouts of the MCs who were in charge of live commentary echoed throughout the venue.

それは、まるでお祭りの様な雰囲気でした。イベントに参加する度にスタッフ職が変わり、初めての人と一緒に担当している筈なのに、テントの中はいつも賑やかでした。中には、タイムトライアルで結果を残したい人もいた筈ですが、本部テントのスタッフだけでなく、それ以外の人たちさえも、他の参加者が出走した際、特に初めて参加した人のタイムトライアルにも注目して、熱い声援を送ってくれた事は大きな喜びですし誇りにしている事です。

It was like a festival. Even though they were working with new staff and people, the headquarters tent was always lively. It was not only the staff in the tent, but also the other people who paid attention to other participants' time trials, especially those of first-time participants, and sent enthusiastic cheers, which was a great joy and something I am proud of.

今は、このような規模のイベントの開催は行なっていません。その為、【 全員スタッフ全員参加制 】で受けた様な感動する機会はありませんが、【 全員スタッフ全員参加制 】の主旨を理解して、積極的に協力してくれて、素敵な体験を与えてくれた事は決して忘れる事は出来ません。そして、単にイベントに参加したのではなく、一緒にイベントを作り上げてくれた人たちにとっても、よい思い出として残り続ける事を願っています。そんな想いを胸に、GRAは新しい道へと活動を進めています。

Nowadays, we do not hold events of this scale. For this reason, we won't have the opportunity to feel the same excitement as we did with the "All Staff Participation System," but we will never forget that everyone understood the purpose of the "All Staff Participation System," actively cooperated, and gave us a wonderful experience. We also hope that it will remain a fond memory for the people who helped create the event. With this feeling in mind, GRA is moving forward on a new path.

『 誕生を支えてくれた H君 / Mr. H, who supported the birth of GRA 』

GRAを誕生させたきっかけは、1990年10月、私・小林が楽しんできたジムカーナイベントが無くなると知った時です。オートバイメーカーのカワサキが、全国各地で開催してきたジムカーナイベントを、関東地区を除き、開催を中止するという報せに大きなショックを受けたからです。イベントに参加した時には、運営にあたっている社員の方々に挨拶をして、機材の片付けなど可能な範囲で手伝いをしていたのですが、それだけでは不足していたのです。そこで、「 楽しみたいのなら、ライダー自身の手でイベントを作っていく必要がある 」と決意しました。

The impetus for the birth of GRA came in October 1990, when I, Kobayashi, learnt that the gymkhana events I had enjoyed were to cease to exist. I was shocked to learn that Kawasaki, a motorcycle manufacturer, was going to stop holding gymkhana events all over Japan, except in the Kanto region. So we decided that if we wanted to have fun, we needed to create the event with the riders' own hands.

そんな決意をイベントで知り合った H君に話したところ、自ら販売店に相談をしてくれて、カワサキ本社内にある教習コースがお借りできる事になり、1991年1月18日に第1回目の 『 GRA ジムカーナレッスン 』を開催する事になったのです。そして、この時から多くの方々からの “支援” の連鎖が始まったのです 。H君の支援が無かったら、もしかすると、今のGRAは存在していなかったでしょう。そして、その後も彼にしか出来ないような支援をしてくれました。

When I told Mr. H, who I had met at an event, about my decision, he personally consulted the dealers and we were able to borrow the training course at Kawasaki's headquarters, and the first GRA Gymkhana Lesson was held on 18 January 1991. Without H's support, GRA would not exist today. And after that, he gave us the kind of support that only he could have given.

『 カワサキの Mさん / Mr. M of Kawasaki 』

1991年1月、不安な気持ちで初めてのイベント開催を迎えた当日、そこでも予想しなかった支援がありました。当時、カワサキ本社の安全運転推進課の課長職に就いてた Mさんが、当方の状況を見越して、休憩や昼食ができる様に暖かい会議室を手配して下さり、その上、参加者用に昼食用の弁当の手配までして下さっていたのです。

In January 1991, on the day of our first event, we were anxiously awaiting our first event, but even there we received unexpected support. Mr. M, who at the time was the manager of the Driving Safety Promotion Section at Kawasaki's head office, had anticipated our situation and arranged a warm conference room for us to take a break 

Mさんには、カワサキ主催のジムカーナイベントに参加していた頃から、他社製の車両に乗っていた僕に対しても、暖かく優しく接して下さり、その上、第1回目のイベント開催にも細かく心を配って下さり、お蔭様で、無事に開催を終えただけでなく、見守って下さる暖かさを深く心に刻めました。

Mr. M has always treated me warmly and kindly since the time I participated in the gymkhana event hosted by Kawasaki. Moreover, he paid careful attention during the first event's organization, and thanks to him, not only did we successfully complete the event, but I also deeply engraved the warmth of his support in my heart.

『 兄貴以上の Oさん / Mr. O, more than a big brother 』

1回目のイベントが終了してから数日後、「開催報告書」と「収支報告書」を参加者と関係者の方向けに作成している時、予想外の “支援” の打診がありました。 「大阪市内でよければ、イベント用の会場を手配しますよ」と Oさんから連絡を受けたのです。僕は最初のイベント開催だけしか頭に無かったのですが、予想外の言葉に喜んで、すぐに会場への手配をお願いをしました。そして、1991年は、急遽、 7回のイベントを追加開催する事が決まったのです。僕にとっては夢の様な “支援” の展開でした。

A few days after the first event, we received an unexpected offer of ‘support’. Mr O contacted me and said, ‘If you want, I can arrange a venue for your event in Osaka City.’ I had only the first event in mind, but I was delighted by the unexpected offer and immediately asked him to arrange a venue for the event. And in 1991, it was suddenly decided to organise seven more events. For me, it was a dream come true for ‘support’.

Oさんとは、ジムカーナイベントで挨拶を交わしていた程度で、さほど親しくお話した事は無かったのですが、この時から数多くの “支援” を適確にして下さり、GRA にとっては、頼もしくて包容力とリーダーシップを持った、兄貴以上、父親のような人です。

I had never spoken to Mr O very closely, only greeting him at gymkhana events, but he has given us a lot of ‘support’ since that time and has been a reliable, patient, leadership, big brother to GRA. He is more like a father figure.

例えば、急遽決まった2回目のイベント当日の朝、そこには、会場を手配して下さった Oさんから、予想外の追加の “支援” がありました。それは、イベント開催には欠かせない「胸ゼッケン（ビブス）」でした。最初は、1番から50番までの 50枚でしたが、参加者数が増えてきた時や古くなった時に応じて、追加や新調を繰り返して、最終的には 150番までのゼッケンを支援して下さいました。上の画像は、レッスンで見本走行をお願いした際のものですが、Oさんには、更にもっと大きな “支援” を受け続けました。

For example, on the morning of the second event, which was decided on at short notice, there was an unexpected additional ‘help’ from Mr O, who had arranged the venue. It was the chest bibs, which are indispensable for the event. At first, we had 50 bibs, numbered 1 to 50, but in the end, she donated up to 150 bibs.

The image above shows a sample run at a lesson, but we continued to receive even greater ‘support’ from Mr O.
