カタバミたちの庭 / My Garden of Oxalis

今、住んでいる家には小さな庭があります。
The house I live in now has a small garden.

でも、3年前に引っ越して来た時には草花は生えていませんでした。
それは、猫よけシートで覆われていたからです。
だから、僕はそれを外しました。
すると、翌年の春には多くの黄色の「カタバミ」が咲きました。
僕の好きな色ですから、嬉しくなりました。

However, when I moved in three years ago, there were no plants growing there.
That's because it was covered with cat-repellent sheeting.
So I removed it.
Then, the following spring, many yellow oxalis bloomed.
It's my favorite color, so I was happy.

そして、秋には「イモカタバミ」が顔を出してくれました。
艶やかな濃いピンク色も悪くありません。
だから、同系色のバッグを買いました。

And in the fall, the tuberous oxalis appeared.
The glossy, deep pink color isn't bad either.
So, I bought a bag in a similar color.

その翌年も、同じ顔触れのカタバミたちが訪れてくれました。
しかし、今年は少し様子が違います。
小さな「ムラサキカタバミ」が多く咲いているのです。

The following year, the same kinds of oxalis visited again,
but this year is a little different.
Many small purple oxalis are blooming.

そのため、黄色の「カタバミ」は顔を見せず、「イモカタバミ」は隅に追いやられています。AI に尋ねると、「 同じカタバミの仲間でも、種子でも増えるカタバミよりも、地下茎（小さな球根）で増えるムラサキカタバミの方が繁殖力が高い 」と言い、「 その勢力図は変わらないでしょう 」と告げられました。

As a result, the yellow oxalis hasn't shown its face, and the tuberous oxalis has been pushed to the corner. When I asked the AI, it said, "Even among the same Oxalis species, purple Oxalis, which reproduces via rhizomes (small bulbs), has a higher reproductive capacity than Oxalis, which reproduces via seeds," and added, "That balance of power is unlikely to change."


カタバミ類は、平安時代から多くの家紋に採用されている程に、その繁殖力が尊ばれていましたが、現代では “雑草” 扱いされています。特に「ムラサキカタバミ」は “やっかい者” 扱いされています。でも、僕には草花を抜けませんし、“黄色” は 今も僕の色です。だから、期待を込めながら、様子を見ていきます。

In Japan, Oxalis species have long been valued for their reproductive power, even being used in many family crests, but nowadays they are treated as "weeds." Purple Oxalis, in particular, is considered a "nuisance." However, I can't bring myself to pull out plants, and "yellow" is still my color. So, I'll keep watching with hopeful anticipation.
