「良い国」を望みます / I Hope for a “Good Country”

「良い国」って、どんな国でしょうか？
信じられない程の “お金持ち” が居る国でしょうか？
強い “武力” を持っている国でしょうか？
元首の “権力” が大変に強い国でしょうか？

What is a “good country”?
Is it one where a few enjoy immense wealth,
or where power is measured only by force,
or where a leader rules without limits?

僕は、国民の一人ひとりの “幸福” を守る国だと思います。
信じられない程の “お金持ち” は要りません。
強過ぎる “武力” は人殺しに繋がります。
元首の強い “権力” の悪い見本は知っています。

I believe a good country protects the happiness of every person.
We do not need extraordinary riches.
We do not need overwhelming power.
We have already seen the harm that unchecked authority brings.

 
国民の事を第一に考え、
国民一人ひとりに奉仕する人であれば、
目立たない、人気の無い元首で構いません
そんな元首と政府を望みます。

If leaders truly place the people first
and serve each citizen with honesty and humility,
it doesn't matter if they are inconspicuous and unpopular.
That is the leadership—and the country—I earnestly hope for.
