新人の冷蔵庫 / The Rookie Fridge

今日（4/4）、新しい冷蔵庫が、我が家にやって来ました。
卒業して行った冷蔵庫は、1995年、震災の時にやって来たので、31年間もの間、毎日働き続けて僕の生活を支えてくれましたが、新しい彼はいつまで元気でしょうか。

Today (April 4th), a brand‑new refrigerator moved into my home.
The one who “graduated” had been with me since 1995 — it arrived right after the earthquake — and for 31 long years it worked every single day, quietly supporting my life. I wonder how long this new guy will stay healthy.

以前の彼の体調が悪くなってから気付いた事がありました。それは、冷凍していた肉やほうれん草などを無駄にした事よりも、冷蔵庫は生活の中心に居て、生活のペースを支え続けてくれた事です。毎日の食事に必要な野菜や肉だけでなく、水や牛乳、柑橘類や卵、更には氷や氷のうの大切な「保管庫」だった事に気付いた時には既に遅く、食事を作る意欲さえ無くなる程の喪失感を味わいました。

When the old guy started feeling unwell, I realized something important. It wasn’t just that I had to throw away frozen meat or spinach — the real shock was noticing that the fridge had actually been the heart of my daily life, quietly keeping my whole routine running. It wasn’t only storing the veggies and meat I needed for everyday meals. It was also the guardian of water, milk, citrus fruits, eggs, ice, and even my precious frozen Ice Pack. By the time I understood that, it was already too late, and the sense of loss was so strong that I even lost the motivation to cook.

新しい彼の内容量は 約290リットル です。店に行った時は、もっと大きな冷蔵庫と迷いました。でも、以前のが 約320リットルで、恐らく 30年後には不要かも知れないので、彼を選びました。今ならば、彼を持ち上げて移動させられるのですが、どうでしょうか？ そんな付き合い方を長くしたいものです。
さあ、明日は食材を買いに行って、彼に預ける予定です。

The new guy has a capacity of about 290 liters. At the store, I hesitated between this one and a bigger model. But since the old one was around 320 liters, and I probably won’t need such a big fridge 30 years from now, I chose this one. Right now, I can still lift him up and move him around, but who knows how long that will last. I hope we can keep this kind of relationship for a long time.
Tomorrow, I’m heading out to buy groceries and entrust them to him.
