街に佇む117クーペ / A 117 Coupe Standing in the City

今日は年度末、県庁と法務局へNPO法人として書類を提出する為に、ひさしぶりに神戸の街へ行って来ました、すると、旧居留地の高級ブランド街で 117クーペが佇んでいました。その流れるようなボディラインと、現代の目で見ると華奢なほどに細いピラーに魅せられて、思わずシャッターを押しました。

Today, being the end of the fiscal year, I went to Kobe for the first time in a while to submit documents to the prefectural office and the legal affairs bureau as an NPO. While there, in the upscale brand-name district of the former foreign settlement, I spotted a 117 Coupe. I was captivated by its flowing body lines and the incredibly slender pillars (which seem almost delicate by modern standards), and I couldn't help but take a picture.

いすゞ自動車が イタリアのボディ デザインハウス、カロッツェリア・ギアに委託して、当時、ギアで主任デザイナーだった ジョルジェット・ジウジアーロ がデザインを手掛け、1968年、国内販売された車です。当初は、その洗練されたスタイリングの為、当時の生産技術といすゞ自動車の生産設備ではプレス成型が困難な箇所が多くあり、大まかな成形をプレス機で行なって、その後は手作業で1台ずつ作られていたので通称「ハンドメイド」と言われていました。

This car was commissioned by Isuzu Motors to the Italian body design house, Carrozzeria Ghia, with Giorgetto Giugiaro, then chief designer at Ghia, handling the design. It was released in Japan in 1968. Initially, due to the limitations of the production technology and Isuzu Motors' facilities at the time, many parts were difficult to press-form. Therefore, the rough shaping was done with a press machine, and then each car was handcrafted, hence the nickname "handmade."

 
その後、生産設備が整うに従って、手作業成形は少なくなり、通称「量産」と呼ばれる車になりましたが、当時は、117クーペを見掛ける度に「ハンドメイド」か？「量産」か？と識別して、「なんだ、量産か」などと言っていた程に「ハンドメイド」117クーペは高価でした。 そして、画像に写る車両は 角型4灯式ヘッドライトになった 1977年以降のモデル「後期型」で、「ハンドメイド」117クーペ信奉者にすれば普通の車です。しかし、現代の街に置かれるととても魅力的に見えるので不思議です。きっと、綺麗にレストアされたボディに、当時の流行の先端だった、イタリアの クロモドラのアルミホイールがとてもよくマッチしているからでしょう。

Later, as production facilities improved, manual molding decreased, and the cars became what is commonly known as "mass-produced." However, back then, whenever people saw a 117 Coupe, they would try to distinguish between "handmade" and "mass-produced," and would say things like, "Oh, it's a mass-produced one," which shows just how expensive the "handmade" 117 Coupe was. The vehicle pictured is a "later model" from 1977 onwards, which features square four-lamp headlights, and is just an ordinary car to a "handmade" 117 Coupe enthusiast. Yet, it looks surprisingly attractive when parked on a modern street. This is probably because the beautifully restored body and the Italian Cromodora aluminum wheels, which were at the forefront of fashion at the time, match it very well.
