何もしない花壇の9月花 / September Flowers in a Natural Flower Bed
「 それ、草だよ！ / That's Weed! 」
2年前、小さな花壇付きの住宅に引っ越して以来、近所の人たちからは「それ、草だよ」と言われ続けています。つまり「折角の花壇なのに、雑草が多く生えているね」と言われてしまう程、僕は花壇の世話はあまりしていません。別な言い方をすれば、見た目の良い人気のある花を咲かす植物を植えて世話をすると良いのでしょうが、僕は全く興味が無いのです。でも、それで良いと考えています。その土地に自然に芽吹く植物を慈しむ事こそが最も自然を愛する事だと信じているからです。
Ever since I moved into a house with a small flower bed two years ago, my neighbors have been constantly telling me, "That's weed!" In other words, I don't tend to my flower beds very often, to the point that they often say, "Your flower beds are so well-loved, but they're overgrown with weeds." In other words, I should plant and tend attractive, popular flowering plants, but I have no interest in that at all. But I think that's fine. I believe that cherishing the plants that sprout naturally in the soil is the greatest way to love nature.

とは言っても、全く世話をしないわけではありません。セイタカアワダチソウの様に、繁殖力が旺盛で他の草花を圧倒してしまう大型の植物は抜き取って、他の草花が活躍できる環境を整えて、日々の水やりを欠かさない様にしています。それでも、僕の花壇には、今、様々な花々が咲いています。
That said, that doesn't mean I don't tend to my flowers at all. I pull out large plants like tall goldenrod that reproduce quickly and overwhelm other flowers, creating an environment where other flowers can thrive, and I make sure to water them daily. Even so, my flower beds are currently filled with a variety of flowers.
花壇のあちこちで花を咲かせているのは、僕が好きな「カタバミ」です。春には黄色のカタバミが咲き、この時期には濃いピンク色のカタバミが咲いています。
My favorite wood sorrel is blooming all over the flower bed. Yellow wood sorrel blooms in the spring, and deep pink wood sorrel is in bloom at this time of year.
黄色い花を咲かせるのは「アブチロン」です。か細く入り乱れた枝ぶりから、きっと、樹齢は十年近い老樹だと思いますが、春から晩秋にかけて花を咲かせてくれます。
The plant with the yellow flowers is an abutilon. Judging from its slender, tangled branches, I'm sure it's an old tree, nearly ten years old, but it blooms from spring to late autumn.
白く小さな花をブラシの様に連ねた「ノシラン」は、キンモクセイの陰に隠れる様にひっそりと咲いています。
A Noshiran, with its brush-like rows of small white flowers, blooms quietly, hidden in the shade of the Osmanthus.
白い花を咲かせた「タカサゴフヨウ」は、きっと、花壇の最初からの住人ではないのでしょう。最初に植えられた太い樹木に寄り添う様に、細い幹から精一杯に枝を伸ばしています。
The white-flowered Hibiscus, a Japanese hibiscus, is probably not an original resident of the flower bed. Its branches are stretching out as far as they can from its slender trunk, as if to cling to the thick tree that was planted first.
かつてはユリが咲いていた場所に、今は「ユリランス」が一輪だけひっそりと花を開いています。どこからやって来たのか分かりませんが、このけなげな姿を見ると、大切に見守ってやりたくなるのです。
Where lilies once bloomed, a single lily orchid now quietly blooms. I don't know where it came from, but seeing this brave creature makes me want to watch over it with care.
花ではありませんが、「ナンテン」の実も少しずつ色づき始めています。去年よりずっと多くの実をつけていて、鳥たちも楽しみにしているでしょう。
Although they're not flowers, the fruits of the Nandina are slowly starting to turn color. There are far more fruits than last year, and I'm sure the birds are looking forward to them.
