プリンスの音色 / Prince's Tone

今日、自転車で出かけて、交差点で信号待ちしている時、後に車が停まった。ミラー越しに見ると黒い車だった。車名はわからない。でも、エンジン音が独特だった。かすかに高周波が混じった乾いた音がしていた。

Today, I went out on my bike and while waiting for the traffic light at an intersection, a car stopped behind me. Looking through the mirror, I saw that it was a black car. I don't know the name of the car. But the engine sound was unique. It had a dry sound with a faint high-frequency sound.

信号が変わり、追い越していった車を見れば プリンス グロリア スーパー6だった。1967年、日本で初めて シングルオーバーヘッドカムシャフト（SOHC）を採用した、直列 6気筒、型式名 G7 エンジンの音でした。雑味や異音はなく、アイドリングは安定していて、コンディションはかなり良い状態の音でした。 高周波成分の音は、きっと、カムシャフトを駆動するチェーン周り、チェーンテンショナーかガイド辺りの音だったのかも知れません。

When the light turned green, I looked at the car that passed me and it was a Prince Gloria Super 6. It was the sound of an in-line 6-cylinder engine, model name G7, which was the first in Japan to adopt a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) in 1967. There were no unpleasant sounds or strange noises, the idling was stable, and the condition was quite good. The high-frequency sound was probably the sound of the chain that drives the camshaft, the chain tensioner or the guide.

 

同じプリンスのエンジン音と言えば、レース専用モデル R380に搭載された GR8 エンジンを、日産に併合された後、スカイライン GT-R 用にディチューンした S20 エンジンがありますが、S20 の音も 現代には無い独特な音だった事を思い出しました。

Speaking of the same Prince engine sound, there is the S20 engine, which was a detuned version of the GR8 engine installed in the race-only model R380 after the company was acquired by Nissan and used in the Skyline GT-R. I recall that the sound of the S20 was also unique and not found in modern cars.
